Standby Is a “Waste;” Development of Energy-Saving Technology

New Recruit E :
Mr. A, when I went to the customer's place, they said to me, "We use the copy machine every day at our office, but the power is left on the entire day, and in the end, it is probably consuming a lot of energy. Is there an energy-saving mode like with home appliances?"
SR A :
Of course there is. At Fuji Xerox, we are seriously involved in developing energy-saving devices for preventing global warming.
New Recruit E :
What kinds of activities are we involved in?
SR A :
Well first of all, we've been progressing with energy-saving technology so that power consumption when the machine is in standby, or when it is not making copies, is zero, since it is considered to be a "waste." Based on these developments, while controlling the electrical power used during standby to as low as possible, we successfully developed technology that shortens the time in which the machine can recover from standby and be used, so that there is no inconvenience for customers. Of course, this has all been achieved while reducing environmental impacts.
New Recruit E :
Really? How is that possible?

The “Fuser,” which Consumes the Most Electricity

SR A :
Hey, didn't you learn all this in training? What part of the copy machine uses up the most electricity?
New Recruit E :
...Where?
SR A :
The part that uses the most electricity is the "fuser," which is used to adhere images onto paper. This is because in the fuser, there is a mechanism for melting the toner and imprinting images onto paper. Heat is necessary for imprinting, so electricity is always being used.
New Recruit E :
That's right. I remember now!
SR A :
In the past, when attempts were made to make the electricity consumed during standby close to zero, it took time for the fuser to warm up, and there was a technical issue where customers couldn't make copies when they wanted to at once.
New Recruit E :
How was this improved?
SR A :
Reexaminations were carried out on the configuration of the fuser from various perspectives so that the time for when a copy machine switches from standby to a state where it can be used could be drastically reduced. There were many kinds of technical developments so that fixing would work even at lower temperatures, such as placing the paper on the belt and making the time it comes in contact with the fuser longer, and making the toner be able to fuse onto the paper at low temperatures, but ultimately, it became possible to lower electrical consumption by a large amount.
New Recruit E :
There was a change in thinking?
SR A :
Right. We are now achieving a combination of energy-saving performance and efficiency in terms of business, by not only considering the speed in which copies are made, but by making sure not to reduce the qualities of copies as well.
New Recruit E :
Pursuing convenience and image quality, and reducing burdens on the environment. The balance between these is important.

Pursuing Energy-Saving in All Models in the Lineup

Fuji Xerox's copy machines are all equipped with energy-saving functions!
SR A :
Another thing that is important is to introduce all of the models in the lineup that are equipped with energy-saving capabilities in order to respond to our customers' needs. Even if one model has excellent energy-saving capabilities, if only a small quantity of this model is sold, we cannot expect any results.
New Recruit E :
That's true. Even if we develop a lot of energy-saving models, if they are not being used, there would be no increases in results for preventing global warming.
SR A :
Yup. That's why at Fuji Xerox, all of our models are equipped with energy-saving functions, regardless of whether they are slow-speed machines, high-speed machines, black-and-white machines, color machines, printers, or copy machines, so that energy-saving can be adopted by all of our customers. It's simply that we are pursuing energy-saving capabilities with our entire lineup.
New Recruit E :
This means that no matter which Fuji Xerox machine is used, it is definitely linked to energy-saving, right? In actuality, what is the extent of energy-saving effects?
1997→2005 40% reduction!
SR A :
Between 1997 and 2005, electrical power consumption per Fuji Xerox copy machine that was being used on the market was cut by 40%. Our machines were also recognized as achieving business performance and energy-saving performance at the same time, and in 2006, we received the Energy Conservation Prize for the eighth year in a row. Even from now on, the development division needs to work hard so that improvements can be made in effects from a business aspect while continuing to contribute to energy-saving in our customers' offices.
New Recruit E :
This means that no matter which machine we recommend to our customers, they are all automatically linked to energy-saving? I have to go explain this to my customer!
