Sports Festival for the Intellectually Challenged

Creating and distributing ID cards

Fuji Xerox has continuously supported the Special Olympics, a sports festival for the intellectually disabled since 1995. The Special Olympics started when the late President Kennedy's younger sister, Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, opened the backyard of her own home to host a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities. Afterwards, with the financial support from the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation, the "Special Olympics" organization was formed in 1968 and eventually expanded throughout the world.

Starting with all-American games held in 1968, the summer Special Olympics Games came to be held on an international level. In 1977, the first Winter Special Olympics were held. Both the Summer and Winter Special Olympics Games are held once every 4 years. Currently, there are approximately 2,250,000 athletes and 500,000 volunteers from 150 countries participating in the Special Olympics Games. In Japan, "Special Olympics Nippon" was established in 1994, with headquarters located in Kumamoto.

Fuji Xerox's Relationship with the Special Olympics

As a common program available at all its business facilities throughout Japan, Fuji Xerox promotes activities to allow numerous employees to take part in some way in the Special Olympics.

1. Participation in World Games and National Games

In each region, Fuji Xerox provides support through donations, sponsorships, provision of practice grounds and meeting rooms, and production of pamphlets and provision of copy services.

2. Voluntary support through everyday training and cultural programs

Each district (prefecture) organization of the Special Olympics organizes everyday athletic training and cultural programs. Fuji Xerox employees across Japan support these activities by signing up as volunteers and participating daily as coaches, judges, and competition staff.

3. Charity golf tournaments held by Fuji Xerox retirees

Once each year, a charity golf tournament is held by Fuji Xerox retirees. The funds collected are donated to support activities such as the Special Olympics World Games.
