Fuji Xerox believes “Kyoto Mechanisms” created by the Kyoto Protocol is an effective system to reduce global greenhouse gas with higher cost-effectiveness and participates in the activities of “Kyoto Mechanisms” positively as means to achieve the reduction target stipulated in Kyoto Protocol.
For example, we are investing in the Japan Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (JGRF), established in December 2004.
JGRF invests in overseas projects to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, in line with the Kyoto Mechanisms. The volume of reduced greenhouse gases is allocated to each investor in proportion to their investment. Investors can apply the reduction received to help them achieve their own targets for the reduction of greenhouse gases.
Following the establishment of national registers of the right to emit greenhouse gases in FY2007, Fuji Xerox opened an account to manage its right.
We earned credits through clean development mechanism (CDM)* and other schemes we have implemented overseas in the past, and these credits can be used to achieve our own greenhouse gas reduction target.
The credits we earned in FY2007 was 368t-CO2.

*CDM (Clean Development Mechanism)
|
CDM is one of the flexible measures set forth in Kyoto Protocol that the volume of greenhouse gas reduced in overseas projects can be converted into achievement of reduction volume in own country promised. It is implemented in energy-saving projects in developing countries carried out by government or companies of developed countries. |
|
Scheme of Japan Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund
|
 |
A system that entitle the volume of greenhouse gas reduced or absorbed in overseas projects conducted by JI(joint implementation) of developed countries to be converted into achievement of promised reduction volume of their own countries.
One of the flexible measures set forth in Kyoto Protocol. |

Methane collection and generation project (China)
|
|
The project is to collect methane generated at the time of digging in the coal mine shaft of Shanxi, and then to generate electricity with the methane collected.
We also contribute to the prevention of the explosion accident by methane.
|
Biomass generation business (Sri Lanka)
|
|
We generated 10MW of electricity with chaff as the fuel and replaced the conventional fossil fuel.
Emissions of greenhouse gas, such as methane, is reduced by this project comparing with by burning off the chaff in the past.

To reduce CO2 emissions, we are working to introduce natural energy sources that do not emit CO2, such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power generation. We are also using power more efficiently through ice/water thermal storage systems and NAS batteries that use power supplied at night.

Fuji Xerox has entered an agreement with Japan Natural Energy Co., Ltd. (JNEC) to outsource wind power generated at a wind turbine at the Tashirotai Wind Power Plant (Kazuno-shi, Akita).
Under the agreement, Fuji Xerox will receive 1.7 million kWh of power a year for 15 years, which will help to reduce CO2 emissions by 607t-CO2 per year.
JNEC has issued Fuji Xerox a Certificate of Green Power to verify the actual results of the power generation.
The certificate demonstrates that Fuji Xerox has used a certain quantity of natural energy for its routine power consumption.

Fuji Xerox has entered into an agreement with Japan Natural Energy Co., Ltd. for green power generation using biomass since FY2006.
During FY2007, 205MWh of power was generated, helping to reduce annual CO2 emissions to 73t-CO2.

*Biomass
|
: |
Renewable organic resources that exclude fossil resources derived from plants and animals (such as livestock excrement, kitchen garbage, and woodchips).

In collaboration with New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Fuji Xerox began solar power generation at the Ebina Center in 1999.
In FY2007, the center produced a total of 84MWh of power, and reduced CO2 emissions by 30t-CO2.
This solar panel consists of 990 pieces of modules and its area is about 850 square meters.
Each module consists of 66 pieces of cells (103mm *103mm / cell). The panel is extended with a total of 65,340 cells.

In October 2003, the Iwatsuki Center installed an energy recovery system powered by a hydroelectric turbine generator driven by recycled air-conditioning water. The system generates 35MWh of power annually.
The electricity generated is used to light areas, such as passageways.

As part of a verification test carried out by the Tokyo Electric Power Company, the Ebina Center installed a 1,000 kW NAS battery to reduce peak daytime power consumption and started operation in March 2002.
The center actively uses electricity for nighttime power with lower CO2 emissions.
Along with reducing the quantity of power purchased on a contract basis, this has brought about a 16 million yen reduction in the center's electricity bills.

|
|
In 1995, the Iwatsuki Center installed an ice thermal storage system, and now four such systems are operating at three production sites.
The system makes ice at night using supplied power, which is then melted to provide cooling during the daytime the following day.
At offices, Fuji Xerox headquarters moved to Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi in January 2007 and introduced NAS battery and ice thermal storage system to actively use electricity for nighttime power as well.

Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen carries out full-scale energy-saving in employees' daily life by installation of solar water heater in the lodgings for the workers of the plant.

Though we introduced various nature energies as trial till now, due to the cost-up of CO2 reduction, we are going to make efforts for more suitable environmental countermeasures, not only by in-house activities but also through investment to external greenhouse gas reduction business for acquisition of emission right, considering cost-effectiveness of CO2 reduction.
