Q&A

Q1. What are your current roles and responsibilities?

I currently am in charge of planning for Denshi-Pen.

Denshi-Pen is a pen with a small built-in camera that enables the easy and quick digitization of handwriting on paper. Because it can easily digitize handwritten information, I think it can be used in various scenes, such as in production control or maintenance.
However, Denshi-Pen is a type of product that Fuji Xerox had never developed before, and unfortunately not many people are aware of it. That's why it becomes important for researchers and engineers like myself to also take part in various marketing and sales support activities, as well as finding new sales channels. It is also important for me to gain information through such types of work so that I can come up with new features and products.

Q2. What do you keep in mind while at work?

First thing is to see things with my own eyes as much as possible. I go to various customer sites, sales distributors, development labs, and manufacturing factories. By actually seeing the challenges facing customers, the passion possessed by sales representatives, the difficulty of developing technology, and the challenges facing production sites, I can truly understand the actual situations.

The second thing is trying to do something different every day. By trying to change the way I do things, even if it's a small change, I get a different perspective on things that I did the day before. I think such an approach leads to finding hints on how to improve what I do.

The third thing is to write down action items, things I noticed, or new ideas in my schedule book as much as possible. One reason for this recording is so that I don't forget anything, and when I have fewer things to remember, I can concentrate on the things that I need to deeply think about.

Q3. What do you think is the value of technology?

I think technology is only a tool that can make people's lives better, and any technology holds value the first time when customers actually use it. It's not "who developed the technology" that is important, but "who first made peoples' lives better using the technology." In order to achieve that, it is also important that customers are made aware of a technology and then want to use it. Those things are the true value of technology.

Technology must be provided in ways that accommodate the people who use it by considering many aspects, such as the interface, quality, design, packaging, manufacturing, and customer support. It must be well thought out so that we can say with confidence that "this technology can make people's lives better."

Q4. What do you like to do to relax or relieve stress?

Playing ice hockey and inline hockey

My hobby is to play ice hockey and inline hockey. When I'm running around chasing the hockey puck while handling the constantly changing game situation, my mind becomes completely refreshed. It's a great way to relieve stress.

Swimming

When I have time on the weekends, I swim for about an hour at the neighborhood swimming pool. These days I take my kids along, so I swim at a more relaxed pace and have fun with my kids.

Waking up early and reading

When I put my kids to bed, I sometimes fall asleep with them. When that happens, I wake up early the next morning around 4 a.m. when it's still quiet and read books. When I read early in the morning, I have a clear mind and feel that I get more information into my head.

One Day - a day in my workweek

Morning I look at what I wrote down in my schedule book on the train the day before, think about what I should do today, and make sure I have covered everything that needs to be worked on.
9:30 a.m. I start with work having the highest priority. I also talk to my boss about the current issues I am facing and ask for advice.
10:30 a.m. I check my email and start on other things. During the morning hours, I try to tackle tasks that require a lot of thought.
12:30 p.m. I usually eat lunch in the cafeteria.
1:30 p.m. I attend meetings. I try to schedule internal meetings or client meetings in the afternoon.
5:00 p.m. I continue work that I couldn't finish in the morning or work on actions that I took in the afternoon meetings.
Evening Before leaving work, I prepare for what I must do first thing tomorrow and also clean my desk. On my train ride home, I write down what I need to do the next day or things to remember that could be pertinent to my work.
