Ma Xiaojun, Research department

Q1. What are your current roles and responsibilities?

I am in charge of researching and developing technology to extract valuable information from enormous amounts of unstructured data. While mainly studying fundamental technologies, particularly those related to natural language processing and image recognition, I research and develop technology to extract data from text and images. In doing so, I focus on three different areas: user profiling on SNS, image annotation technology to utilize image information, and data analysis to extract and analyze useful data from large amounts of information.

Q2. What do you keep in mind while at work?

Finding pleasure in acquiring a wide range of cutting-edge knowledge related to ICT

It is essential to accumulate knowledge on ICT in order to design new technologies and algorithms to respond to various issues. As advances in ICT are being made day by day, we need to always stay informed on the latest technology trends in addition to understanding conventional technology. When learning about new things, I keep in mind that it is "never too late to learn" and find pleasure in studying. I believe this stance will lead my research to success.

I appreciate that my boss is always very caring toward me and my colleagues and actively encourages us to find new opportunities for self-development. I am currently participating in study sessions within my department. In addition, I am taking an online class on cutting-edge ICT offered by a renowned American university. I spend at least an hour a day studying.

Q3. What do you think is the value of technology?

Aiming to become a highly skilled professional data scientist

When I started working at Fuji Xerox, I was unfamiliar with technologies that use many numerical expressions. But, as I became used to my job, I grew to enjoy it. My current goal is to become a leading scientist in the fields of machine learning and data mining.

My group focuses on researching and developing fundamental technologies and applying these technologies to big data. Along with the other group members, I would like to play a major role in promoting big data analysis while utilizing our unique technology.

Q4. What do you like to do to relax or relieve stress?

I read Japanese comics, watch anime and read novels. In particular, I like historical novels that describe political horse-trading and people's emotional conflicts.

In the morning I write programs and conduct experiments. I design and verify algorithms to resolve issues.
12:00 p.m. I eat lunch.
In the afternoon I attend regular meetings and participate in study sessions. I read academic papers or continue working on the programming or experiment that I was doing in the morning. I also exchange information with other non-Japanese employees in other departments.
