Ubiquitous Workplace EOO (E Open Office)

Our business environment is constantly changing, as evidenced by the development of network computing technology such as web services, the globalization of markets, and the growing demand for business-to-business cooperation. In these situations, there is an increasing need for a business environment that connects the knowledge of different people, transcending the barriers of time, space, organizations, and companies.

To meet these needs, Fuji Xerox developed "Ubiquitous Workplace EOO (E Open Office)". EOO aims to provide users with environments where they can use various services in accordance with the workplace and situation. Ideally, there would be no need to arrange materials or devices beforehand, even for a meeting outside the office. EOO also aims to allow users to operate various services easily without having to worry about operating IT devices.

EOO provides collaboration environments in which users can utilize knowledge, transcending the barriers of organizations and places

EOO provides collaboration environments in which users do not have to worry about operating IT devices, through a user interface that can be operated intuitively, while still providing technology, such as IC chip-equipped employee ID cards for security protection, and document service coordination technology. Thus, EOO makes it possible to utilize the knowledge scattered across different departments of a company and foster collaboration, including with remote sites.

EOO utilizes three key technologies to provide these values.

System control technology which eliminates the stress of operating IT devices

Using conference rooms with embedded computers connected to a network, users can share information with remote sites in real time, with simple operations like using a copy machine. Users can open the files for a presentation using control panels located on the walls, etc. These panels are designed to show the information necessary for the meeting, and users can control the EOO system with simple operations (retrieve document, make presentation, save annotations, distribute, and print).

Database technology managing documents and meta-data for meetings

The documents used in a meeting are automatically stored in a database, together with their context information (e.g., who used the documents where and when, and in which meeting) in coordination with the document management service. Using this information, it is also possible to easily retrieve notes from the meeting afterward.

Coordination technology that bridges the gap between input devices and services

This technology automatically combines devices and services in accordance with the status of meeting. When a user swipes an IC card over a card reader and then identity is authenticated, projects that the user can attend and available documents are instantly displayed. This mechanism using IC cards is the common infrastructure of EOO, which provides optimal service in accordance with the person and the situation while keeping necessary security.
