Optical interconnection is a technology for using light to accelerate the rate of signal transmission within and between devices in a system. The two major components of the optical interconnection technology developed by Fuji Xerox are the light source device, the Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL), and the light transmission path using optical sheet bus technology. The following mainly outlines the optical sheet bus technology used for optical transmission inside a device.

Basic principles

In most cases interconnection between boards inside a device requires that multiple boards be connected using one wiring. However, conventional optical wiring, such as optical fibers, require one-to-one wiring, and implementation of a bus-type wiring necessitates the use of multiple optical fiber lines, optical bidirectional circuits, an optical branching device, and so forth, raising a number of cost and space concerns that need to be addressed.

By diffusing light through a sheet-type, light-guiding channel and the multi-node output of optical signals, we have been able to realize high-performance optical transmission using low-cost bus-type wiring. Furthermore, the use of lamination for the optical transmission channel enables multi-bit optical transmission offering multi-branch transmission and much higher bandwidths than electricity-based systems.

High band width, multiple fanout	:	Enables easy implementation of one-to-many, many-to-many high-speed optical transmission
Lower cost of parts/development	:	Realizes a 50% reduction in cost of parts when compared to conventional optical wiring. In addition, by significantly reducing the number of wiring designs necessary, development cost is also reduced.
Miniaturization	:	Enables miniaturization through ease of implementation and simplicity of wiring.
Low noise	:	Radiation field noise is reduced by a maximum of 20dB when compared to electric bus.

Products using the technology (under development)

Optical distributor

An optical distributor capable of branching digital video input signals that makes use of the optical sheet bus technology is currently under development. Since the distributor will be capable of branching and distributing the same content simultaneously, its well suited for building multi-information systems in fields such as education, amusement, transportation, and so forth.

Extended memory device

An extended memory device with a high-speed memory bus using the optical sheet bus technology is currently under development. The device is capable of coping with the requirements of rising access speeds and higher server performance.
