Fuji Xerox has implemented an automatic assembly line for toner cartridges for the purpose of meeting diverse customer needs by creating a high-quality, low-cost, and highly productive manufacturing system (Fig. 1).
By developing original module-type equipment that combines industrial robots, highly versatile supplying units, and an automatic handling system, we have created a flexible manufacturing line that can quickly respond to design changes and be used for manufacturing other products (Fig. 2).

At Fuji Xerox, we strive to enhance the flexibility of our automated assembly line in order to leverage it for the assembly of multiple products. One approach to achieving that goal is to use design information from the early phases of product development to improve the assembly process and adjust the materials used, in order to develop highly stable manufacturing facilities and equipment that can run long hours, thereby reducing costs. Other activities are also underway to further reduce costs and enlarge the applicable range of the automated assembly line, such as standardizing the shapes of parts and the design of labels and packages.
