Recently, the use of electronic patient record systems becomes popular. Browsing of patients' data is supported by linking with various department systems within a hospital. Patients' data is actually managed in each individual department system and paper documents are not managed electronically. However, various issues are turning up, such as the management of all patient records and the assurance of lifelong readability.
To solve these issues, Department of Medical Information Science, Osaka University Hospital proposed the DACS (Document Archiving and Communication System) concept. DACS is a system to enable long-term storage of patient records and assures integrity, readability, and preservative quality by integrated management of various data within the hospital using the common document formats.
This paper describes the concept of DACS and introduces the solution developed by Fuji Xerox.
