Application of Optical Transmission Technology for Digital Printing System

Recently, there has been growing demand for high-speed digital printing systems in the printing market. In order to increase the data transmission speed for processing large amounts of image data, the feasibility of using optical transmission technology in digital printing systems has been discussed.

A system to transmit data from the controller to the image output unit was considered and an optical module developed to realize asymmetric transmission using three downstream channels and one upstream channel. The transmission speed of each channel is 4.25 Gbps, thus achieving a total data transmission speed of 12.75 Gbps.

To assure transmission quality, the module was designed based on worst-case values in considering the jitter from transmission loss at each point on the board. The optical transmission system including the developed module was then evaluated and found to satisfy all design values at all the points.
