A Service for Easily Providing Local Sightseeing Information as an Audio Guide

Fuji Xerox's Audio Guide Service, which was released as a product in July 2013, detects when a tourist approaches a pre-specified point by retrieving location information using a smartphone's GPS and automatically plays audio tour guide content. Through conducting experiments at 10 tourist destinations over the course of approximately three years, we researched and developed a way to provide a tour guide service that would give tourists a high level of satisfaction. Through these experiments, it became clear that it was important for us to provide not only the smartphone application itself but also support for the creators of guide content, so we developed a cloud-based support service that allows tour guide service providers to easily create content themselves. This makes it possible to provide tourists with a high-quality tour guide service that makes them feel almost as if they are being shown around by a local resident. This paper describes the service's concept, its system, the results of our field tests, and future development.
