Information Processing Technologies for the Utilization of Unstructured Data

In recent years, along with the progress of cloud computing and sensor network technologies, large amounts of unstructured data including text, images, audio, and video have been accumulated, and there have been attempts to apply various data analytic technologies to this accumulated unstructured data to gain useful information. It is, however, intrinsically difficult for computers to handle unstructured data, as it must be converted to structured data before data analytic technologies are applied. This paper describes our natural language processing and image processing technologies as the key technologies for converting unstructured data into structured data. This paper also introduces our network analysis and collective intelligence technologies as key technologies for data analysis. As examples of applied research using the above technologies, this paper gives an overview of our activities to analyze unstructured data such as data from sales force automation systems, "voice of the customer" data, and data from social networking services.
