A Cross-media Service for Collecting User Viewing Records of Direct Mail

When compared with web-based advertising delivered via email, social networking services, etc., direct mail (DM), a paper medium, lacks in bi-directionality and presents greater challenges in the collection of feedback from its recipients. In order to overcome these issues, this paper proposes a cross-media system in which the viewing records of DM recipients are gathered using a smartphone application (app). By using the app's camera function to scan an image printed on the DM, recipients access predetermined web content linked to the DM image. Viewing records (i.e., what image was scanned and what web content was accessed) of the app users are then collected on servers. Businesses that have distributed DM are able to analyze these records and use them in the development of sales strategies. The practicability of the proposed system's app was confirmed in a prototype experiment.
