Eco Solution Model Cases
As a new type of contribution towards our customers' environmental conservation activities, Fuji Xerox proposes Eco Solution, which aims for high productivity of operations while reducing environmental impacts.
At Fuji Xerox, we have developed indicators called "Eco Efficiency" and "Progress Rate for Eco Efficiency" as an evaluation system for Eco Solution.
Below is an introduction to a model that uses these indicators
There is a customer who, due to an expansion of operations, continued installing new equipment, ending up with 1 copy machine, 2 fax machines, and 4 printers for a total of 7 machines. This same customer was also making printouts that were one-sided. First, looking at the aspect of "environmental impacts," which serve as the denominator, before implementing our solution, there was an increase in extra costs, caused by an increase in the amount of electricity consumption, and installation space to accommodate 7 machines, and an increase in the amount of paper used due to one-sided printing.
Now let's look at the situation after a solution was implemented through a multifunctional device and DocuWorks. Since it was possible to aggregate all of the output devices into one multifunctional device, the number of equipment was able to be reduced from 7 to 1, and also enabled for reductions in the energy consumption amount and the installation space used for the equipment. It was also possible to reduce the amount of paper resources, by making outputs using the 2 Up and duplex printing functions and through digitization, allowing for 4 A4 sheets worth of information to be printed on 1 sheet, or even on 0 sheets. Just by looking at only the environmental impacts caused by the denominator office, an effect of approximately 70% in reductions was realized.
Solution's Utility and Value (Numerator) and Eco Efficiency, Progress Rate of Eco Efficiency
On the other hand, let's take a look at the solution's utility and value, which would be considered the numerator. If this utility and value are translated into productivity, would productivity decrease? In considering the environment and reducing the number of equipment, does business efficiency decline? Let's compare productivity before and after implementation of the solution by looking at the time for processing documents.
Before implementation of this solution, since the output speed for each machine was slow, and only 1 page worth of information could be output on 1 sheet of A4 paper, it took a lot of time to process information. After implementation of this solution, however, all of the equipment was replaced with one high-speed multifunctional device that can print 40 ppm, and since the output speed per machine was fast and it became possible to output 4 pages worth of information on 1 A4 sheet using the duplex and 2 up functions, the time for processing information was able to be shortened. In other words, based on the performance and output speed of the machine, productivity increased. Though it is not mentioned in this evaluation, there are expectations for further increases in work efficiency due to "reductions in the operation and management of equipment," "reduction in man-hours for information sharing due to digitization," etc., that are also ultimately related to the performance and output speed of the machine. In this model case, there was an approximately 1.6-fold improvement in productivity and an approximately 70% reduction in the amount of CO2 emissions. The eco efficiency increased by approximately 5.5-fold after implementation of this solution as compared to before. This means that compared to before implementation of the solution, it became possible to process more information using less CO2. Environmental impacts could be reduced while increasing productivity. From this, it is also possible to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions by 1,850kg-CO2 per year. This is the equivalent to the amount of CO2 that 132 cedar trees absorb in one year *1.
