Smart Energy Management Technology

Along with a growing awareness of saving energy in offices, more efforts are needed to reduce energy consumption and improve the energy-saving performance of multifunction devices.

Conventionally, when a multifunction device recovered from sleep mode, the entire device had to be powered up to enable a user to use all functions.

Fuji Xerox has developed "Smart Energy Management Technology" that improves both energy-saving performance and user convenience. In this technology, a multifunction device is divided into four function modules: "Scanner," "Control Panel," "Controller," and "Output Device" (see Fig. 1). Then, precise power control activates only the function modules necessary for use. Conversely, a user can only operate a conventional multifunction device when the entire device is ready for operation. When using Smart Energy Management Technology, however, only the control panel and controller are activated when the device recovers from sleep mode. It only takes two seconds to activate the control panel after the device recovers from sleep mode and then the Start button is enabled, improving user convenience. Moreover, a selected scan or fax function can be performed without activating an energy-consuming output device, thereby further reducing energy consumption.

In Smart Energy Management Technology, four power cut-off circuits precisely control the power to each of the four function modules. A user can also operate the control panel even while functions are being activated, so as not to adversely affect user convenience. The Start button is enabled as soon as necessary signals from the sensors and device memory information are confirmed. For example, when a device recovers from sleep mode and a user selects the copy function, the Start button is enabled as soon as the machine is ready to detect the document size. Then, after paper tray information is confirmed, the document is scanned. In this way, the machine is controlled so that operations begin sequentially as soon as the required information is confirmed.

And when performing functions that do not use an input or output device (e.g., paperless fax, accumulating print data), initializing the input or output device or running the fan of the output device generates no unnecessary startup sounds, resulting in an even quieter office environment.
