Electronic Document Technology (DocuWorks)

Fuji Xerox is researching and developing technologies to create electronic documents without losing the benefits of using paper documents under the concept of "making paper in the digital world." These efforts have resulted in the commercialization of our document handling software "DocuWorks."
The structure, architecture, and features of DocuWorks are described below.

  • Electronic documents created by various applications and all scanned documents can be managed in the same window. Both electronic documents and paper documents can be handled in the same manner.
  • Similar to spreading out documents on a desk, the featured display function makes it possible to intuitively grasp the size and number of pages of each document. The annotation function also allows the adding of labels, markings by markers, and stamps, thereby realizing the usability of paper for electronic data. Since the documents are electronic, searching and sharing the documents are made easy, and security is assured.

DocuWorks provides document handling technology that focuses on the following document handling concepts.

  • "Intuitive"
    Operation is familiar since usability is similar to that of paper, a desk, and office supplies, and therefore can be memorized immediately.
  • "Speedy"
    Operation is quick so as to achieve minimum waiting time.
  • "Comfortable"
    Operation is stress-free and does not interfere with the users' thoughts.

DocuWorks consists of DocuWorks Core (i.e. core component that maintains consistency among the DocuWorks document format, WYSIWYGNote1 drawing, and document data model) and such applications as the DocuWorks document creating driver, a viewer for viewing and editing, a document operating desk, and tray options which are available for the GUI of each language. The DocuWorks software family is structured by versions not only for Windows but also for various CPUs and operating systems, modules for embedding DocuWorks in multifunction devices or servers, and APIs for developing optional software.

  1. DocuWorks Printer
    A virtual printer driver invoked through the print function of general applications to create a DocuWorks document.
  2. DocuWorks Desk
    An application for displaying thumbnail images in two-dimensional rows to allow users to easily handle various types of documents.
  3. DocuWorks Viewer
    A viewer for displaying and editing a DocuWorks document. Versions for Windows®, Mac OS, Windows Mobile®, iPhone®, iPad®, and Android are provided.
  4. DocuWorks Embedding Modules
    Modules to create and handle DocuWorks documents (e.g., for creating DocuWorks documents from scanned images, printing DocuWorks documents, and extracting attribute information such as text from DocuWorks documents).
  5. DocuWorks Optional Software
    A group of optional software enabled on the DocuWorks Core component (e.g., Tray Option, Content Filter, Context Service, Thumbnail Extension, and DocuWorks Folder).
  6. DocuWorks Development Tool Kit and Linking Modules
    Various linking functions enabled by the DocuWorks Development Tool Kit that are available online and other DocuWorks linking interfaces.
WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get): A technology used to match what is displayed on the screen and the actual processed content (such as printed documents).
