An Initiative to Resolve Medical and Welfare Issues in Communities through Reconstruction Efforts after the 3.11 Earthquake

This paper introduces an initiative launched in support of the areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. This initiative aims to promote activities for creating shared value, or CSV, and resolve issues together with local communities in the affected areas. In order to identify issues and verify their solutions, Fuji Xerox has redefined the value of documents used daily on-site in medical, nursing, and welfare situations with the cooperation of a medical institution in Kamaishi City, one of the affected areas in Iwate Prefecture, where we have been providing support. Through this initiative, it was discovered that establishing connections between people with various backgrounds and creating opportunities to give momentum to these activities are needed in order to resolve issues in the communities. We call this initiative Mirai Zukuri (future creation), meaning revitalization of community, and we consider it to be a future business model that we need to continue working on.
